AMBASSADORS OF HOPE

My dream is to make a difference; to be heard.

My dream definitely involves travelling and studying abroad now and not only learning from other people, but giving people the hope that they can achieve their goals, no matter who they are or what background they have.

Ruby – Brighton

My dream is to make a difference; to be heard. To help other young people to escape being boxed in by their gender or the colour of their skin. Lockdown, as with many people, really took its toll on my family: my GCSEs were cancelled and then, right at the height of the pandemic, my mum had a heart attack.

Being in a single-parent family, I was left at home alone while she recovered, with no one allowed to come and visit because of social distancing measures. I felt really disorientated, and let-down and I wasn’t sure if my dream of being a medic, that I had had for almost half my life, was for me anymore. However, I really took that time to gain a better understanding of myself and focus on the things I enjoy doing and the issues that I am passionate about. I came to terms with the racism and discrimination I had faced in many aspects of life, being a woman of dual-heritage. But I know now, more than ever, that I will not let these labels define me or my achievements.

I’m an extremely hard-worker, and I can really achieve my full potential now that I recognise that no one can take my work ethic away from me. I’m studying the International Baccalaureate at college now and, although it’s still forming, and changes shape occasionally, my dream is being to look more humanities based, as I have come to realise how much I love learning about other people and different cultures, including my own Pakistani heritage.

My dream definitely involves travelling and studying abroad now and not only learning from other people, but giving people the hope that they can achieve their goals, no matter who they are or what background they have.
